“Nutritional Supplements”. These two simple words encompass so much. Nutritional supplements are taken for a wide variety of reasons ranging from skin care to cancer prevention. There is such a vast selection of supplements to choose from that it can sometimes be an overwhelming task to choose the right one. I compiled just a few tips to share with you that may help make your job easier.
1- Always make sure you purchase from a reputable manufacturer. Check the manufacturer’s website before purchasing. Read reviews about the particular company or product. You always want to make sure the manufacturer is held to some sort of standard of production. Do they mention undergoing lot testing and quality checks? You also want to make sure there is a valid telephone number that you can contact the company at in the event you have an adverse reaction or questions in general.
2- Always read the label. Don’t be fooled by any unrealistic promises printed on labels. If what the product is saying it can do sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Check the ingredients. Verify the expiration date. Does it contain any fillers? Is it hypoallergenic? Are there specific directions for use or storage? Improper storage of supplements may cause the supplement to loose effectiveness.
3- Always consult with a doctor or pharmacist. If you have any questions about how a supplement may interact with prescription drugs or other nutrients you may be taking, ask a qualified expert. Consider any and all health conditions you have and ask if the supplement may effect you differently since you have that particular condition. For example, hypertension, diabetes, pregnancy, breast feeding, or heart disease.
